Cardinals’ Fans Celebrate in Style
A surprising scene unfolded in St. Louis recently as an enthusiastic crowd of shirtless fans took over Busch Stadium. In a thrilling game on Tuesday night, Ivan Herrera hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning, leading the Cardinals to a 9-6 walk-off victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates. As he celebrated around the bases, he waved his shirt, acknowledging the exuberant fans.
This crowd had become something of a phenomenon by Friday, adding to the excitement surrounding the Cardinals’ season. During a close match against the Kansas City Royals, around 100 fans decided to congregate in an empty section of the stadium, and by the time the game entered extra innings, it was filled with people celebrating shirtless.
The atmosphere intensified when the Cardinals walked the Royals in the 11th inning, and a local fan, Caleb Cummings, originally sparked the idea, which really caught on among the fans.
Cardinals coach Oli Marmol expressed his appreciation for the lively environment the fans created. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the team stays engaged and ready for upcoming games. Marmol even arranged for tickets for the shirtless fans to continue enjoying the games over the weekend, even inviting them into the clubhouse after a victory on Saturday.
“What you guys did for them was amazing; they really enjoyed every moment of it. When they all showed up, the place erupted,” Marmol shared with the fans.
Returning to Tuesday’s game, the shirtless fans maintained their infectious enthusiasm. Herrera’s teammates joined in the celebration, removing their jerseys as he stood proudly at home plate.
This marked the Cardinals’ fifth walk-off victory of the season. As they gear up to face the Pirates again in the ongoing series, hopes remain high for more memorable moments to come.
