Airbnb Expands Travel Services Beyond Rentals

Airbnb is broadening its scope, venturing further into the travel sector with services like airport pickups, grocery deliveries, luggage storage, car rentals, boutique hotels, and unique travel experiences.

This announcement, made on Wednesday, revealed that users can now arrange grocery deliveries through Instacart in over 25 cities across the U.S., airport rides through Welcome Pickup in more than 160 global cities, and luggage storage via Bounce at over 15,000 locations worldwide.

Additionally, Airbnb plans to introduce in-app car rentals this summer.

“We want to sprinkle a bit of magic into every trip,” said Dave Stevenson, the chief business officer at Airbnb, during an interview.

At the same time, the platform is incorporating boutique and independent hotels in key cities such as New York, Paris, London, Rome, and Singapore. They’re also rolling out AI-enhanced features, which include review summaries, listing comparisons, and more advanced customer support tools.

This move signifies Airbnb’s ongoing dedication to enhancing travel services and experiences that go beyond standard homestays.

Reflecting on the past few years, Stevenson noted that after facing challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company decided to downsize and refine its core business. “We really worked hard to perfect what we did. But I always had in mind to gear up for a service expansion when the time was right,” he added.

The platform currently offers more than 3,000 curated experiences globally, including tours related to famous landmarks like the Tower of London, Tokyo Skytree, and the Taj Mahal.

Looking ahead, Airbnb is also gearing up for travel related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, planning exclusive fan events and experiences led by athletes.

Stevenson expressed confidence, anticipating that World Cup demand might surpass the influx seen during the Paris Olympics, where over 700,000 guests booked Airbnb properties.

“A typical homeowner could earn around $3,000 by sharing their space,” he noted.

Moreover, Airbnb is introducing new social and group planning tools. The enhanced Travel tab will display reservations alongside local dining, attractions, and experiences, letting users save places and create shared itineraries.

This summer, a new travel map and “Connect” feature will debut, allowing users to see where friends have stayed, view their reviews and reservations, and directly message them for travel advice.

“These group travel planning tools should be quite beneficial, especially for those traveling with family or friends,” Stevenson remarked.

New services and hotel options are now accessible in select areas, with car rental and more app features set to launch later this summer.
