Record Number of Climbers Summit Mount Everest

This week saw a staggering 274 climbers reach the peak of Mount Everest in just one day. Critics, however, are raising alarms about the growing number of adventurers, each paying around $15,000 for the chance to conquer the world’s tallest mountain.

This latest surge surpasses Nepal’s previous record of 223 climbers set back in 2019, according to Rishi Bhandari, the secretary general of the Nepal Expedition Operators Association. He mentioned that the final tally could be even higher as not all climbers have reported their summits yet.

So far, Nepal has granted 494 permits for this climbing season, each costing that hefty fee of $15,000.

Interestingly, climbers have exclusively tackled Everest from the Nepali side this year, since permits from China for the Tibetan side haven’t been issued.

There are growing concerns among climbing experts regarding the dangers associated with so many climbers on the mountain. Overcrowding could result in critical bottlenecks, particularly in Everest’s notorious “death zone,” where the oxygen levels become perilously low. It’s kind of daunting when you think about it—what if someone gets stuck there? That could be disastrous.

Nepal has made some attempts to enhance safety, including stricter regulations and increased fees for climbers, though some leaders in the region argue that the current number is manageable. Lukas Furtenbach, an expedition organizer from Austria’s Furtenbach Adventures, expressed that as long as climbers are well-equipped with oxygen, major issues should be avoided. He pointed out that on other large mountains, like Zugspitze in the Alps, thousands more attempt to summit daily.

All things considered, it raises a question: Is it still a climb, or has it turned into more of a hustle for those looking for fame on a peak?
