__________
Greetings, Dear Reader,
THE OLDER AND BLACKER YOU ARE
Just to clarify, that’s not an actual saying… but it certainly rings true with recent polling in the DC mayoral race.
At the forefront are two candidates from DC, Kenyan McDuffie, aged 51, and Janeese Lewis George (often referred to as JLG), who is 38.
McDuffie started his career as a postal worker, supporting himself through school. He graduated from Howard University, earned his JD, and worked as a trial attorney within Obama’s civil rights division before stepping into local government in 2012.
In contrast, JLG is the daughter of a postal worker. She also pursued a JD and had a brief stint as a juvenile prosecutor before entering local politics.
One might think this background could provide her with insight into issues of crime and justice, but, well, I hate to burst your bubble on that, Dear Reader.
JLG identifies as a “Democratic-socialist” and once suggested that the DC Metro Police should be defunded and replaced with a “community approach” involving social workers. She’s also in favor of wealth taxes and government-controlled housing.
It’s the same old story … again.
When compared to JLG, McDuffie leans more centrist. He advocates for strengthening police presence and imposing stricter juvenile curfews. His views on housing are more accommodating for builders and investors.
While he argues for cutting unnecessary regulations and a pragmatic approach, she calls for “bold, systemic change,” a phrase that often suggests top-down interventions that have historically flopped.
Essentially, she’s a black version of Zohran Mamdani, and surprisingly, her campaign appears to be thriving for similar reasons.
You might recall that if it hadn’t been for voters showing up in NYC recently, Cuomo likely would have bested Mamdani.
This polling presents another interesting trend: Older and black voters are increasingly showing support for McDuffie’s views on policing.
So, it seems that younger white residents and interns in think tanks are about to have a major say in crime policy that directly impacts longtime community members.
The takeaway: Those who are younger, have higher educational backgrounds, and who are new to DC tend to favor Lewis George, as noted in the polling report.
“Better educated,” really? It’s a little laughable. Many of these younger voters have little real-world experience, and their degrees in International Relations or Political Science don’t mean much.
Furthermore, a significant number may depart the district before having to contend with the outcomes of their political choices. It’s estimated that around 40-60% of those aged 18-29—the group poised to elevate JLG to the mayor’s office—won’t be around in four years, based on census projections.
So, what we have here is white flight leaving older black residents to deal with the fallout.
How poetic, really.
