Stop & Shop Cuts Prices in New York Area Stores
Stop & Shop is reducing prices at its locations in the New York area, with widely used items like bagels and smoked salmon seeing reductions of up to 23%. This comes as many shoppers grapple with the ongoing affordability crisis.
The price drops will affect 137 Stop & Shop stores across New York and New Jersey. Roger Wheeler, the chain’s president, referred to this initiative as a permanent “price reset,” aimed at providing customers with some assurance during these challenging times.
Wheeler shared, “Our primary objective is to really grasp what our customers are experiencing at this moment.”
He further noted, “People are stretched, their budgets are tight, and they have to make tough choices. We want to meet them where they are right now.”
This change follows persistent feedback from customers regarding increased prices, a trend that started around the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Furthermore, the problem of affordability has intensified lately, primarily due to soaring gas prices—rising above $5 a gallon in certain areas—and a general grocery price increase of 2.9% over the past year.
Additionally, energy prices surged 3.8% from March to April and have climbed a staggering 17.9% since last year, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Wheeler pointed out that complaints about rising affordability have surged in recent years. “It’s not just groceries where people feel the pinch. Families are finding it increasingly difficult to manage,” he commented.
Stop & Shop’s “price reset” is part of a broader initiative that started two years ago, which has already resulted in discounts at stores in Quincy, Massachusetts.
Some highlighted price reductions include a significant 28% off Nathan’s Beef Franks and a 9% drop on Memorial Day favorites like Kaiser rolls. Additionally, the price of rotisserie chicken will be reduced by $1, bringing it to $6.99.
Wheeler also emphasized that these reductions not only aim to keep loyal customers but also to attract new shoppers to Stop & Shop.
