Ellison’s Mixed Messages on Fossil Fuels
In a recent video, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison appears to express some appreciation for fossil fuels, despite actively suing refineries regarding climate change issues. He mentioned that since the onset of the Iran war, gas prices have surged from “about $2.98” to “about $4 and fluctuating.” The video features a man filling up his vehicle, emphasizing how these rising costs are affecting “everyday life.”
Ellison highlighted the struggles many families face, stating that they have exhausted their finances just to get by. He noted how climbing fuel prices complicate tasks like commuting to work, dropping kids off at school, and grocery shopping. He remarked that Minnesotans deserve relief instead of more financial pressure.
The footage seems to have been recorded at a Kwik Trip gas station, as indicated by its red and white branding and a local promotional event called “The Bake Sale,” which offers discounts on baked goods. Reports indicate that some gas sold there comes from Flint Hills Resources’ Pine Bend refinery.
However, Ellison’s office had previously filed a lawsuit in 2020 against the American Petroleum Institute, Exxon Mobil, and the Pine Bend Refinery. It’s worth noting that this legal action claims that these companies conspired to mislead the public about the impacts of using fossil fuels. The suit demands transparency regarding research on climate change related to the defendants’ products and calls for a public education campaign on climate issues managed by an independent third party.
On May 4, the U.S. Department of Justice reportedly filed a complaint against Minnesota, suggesting that Ellison’s lawsuit oversteps and poses undue challenges for energy production and national security.
Additionally, concerns have been raised in the past about Ellison’s handling of significant Medicare fraud during his term as attorney general. It’s a lot to unpack, isn’t it? The contrasts in his messages can leave one wondering what direction he’s really aiming for here.
