Republican Goes Against Trump, Teams Up With Democrat To End Weaponization Victim Fund

Lawmakers Reject Trump’s Weaponized Victims Fund

On Thursday, members from both the Republican and Democratic parties united to oppose President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion Weaponized Victims Fund.

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican from Pennsylvania, along with Rep. Tom Suozzi, a Democrat from New York, introduced the Bipartisan Transparency for American Taxpayers Act. This act aims to prevent the establishment of a fund intended for victims of President Trump’s legal battles, effectively blocking the use of federal funds to support claims related to the newly created Anti-Weaponization Fund.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) established this fund to compensate individuals deemed victims of unjust government actions and misuse of force. “Government institutions shouldn’t be weaponized against any American; it’s critical that we address past wrongs and ensure this doesn’t happen again,” said Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in a press release. He emphasized that a legal process is being put in place for victims to seek justice.

Fitzpatrick raised concerns about the transparency regarding the fund’s financing and distribution. He argued that the creation of a fund like this shouldn’t operate without clear oversight. “Taxpayer money can’t be redirected into a discretionary fund without proper accountability,” he stated, adding that transparency is crucial.

The fund came about as part of a settlement deal relating to Trump’s civil lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over leaked tax returns. Fitzpatrick expressed worries alongside his constituents, indicating they oppose the idea of a fund lacking clear oversight from the DOJ.

During a meeting with several Republican senators, Blanche acknowledged the unease about the fund but stated that there appears to be public support for it. “I think most Americans actually favor this use of their tax dollars,” he remarked.
