Maxi Moralez of NYCFC tears ACL, raising uncertainty about his soccer career

Maxi Morales Faces Uncertain Future Following Injury

The future of New York City FC legend Maxi Morales is in question after he announced on social media that he has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The club revealed that he will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, which has led Morales to share some of his feelings about what lies ahead.

Morales, one of the most celebrated players in NYCFC’s history, implied that this injury might bring his career to an end, stating, “There are so many unanswered questions.” He expressed a mix of emotions, saying: “At this point in my career, who knows—I don’t know if it’s going to end like this? There was so much going through my head, so much sadness, so much disappointment, so many unanswered questions. Thank you to everyone who has sent me a message.”

For now, it seems that Morales might at least finish the 2026 MLS season. The club has not outlined a specific timetable for his return but mentioned that he would “immediately begin rehabilitation” after his surgery.

The non-contact injury occurred during Saturday’s Hudson River Derby match against Red Bull New York at Sports Illustrated Stadium, prompting him to be carried off the field on a stretcher in the 35th minute.

NYCFC’s head coach, Pascal Jansen, has approached updates regarding Morales with caution. After the club’s recent U.S. Open Cup loss to Columbus, he mentioned they were “waiting for confirmation of a few things.”

Morales, who wears the number 10 jersey, has participated in 15 matches this season, scoring one goal and providing nine assists. His value to the team is significant, as he is their top playmaker.

After the 2025 season, there were questions about Morales’ future, but he decided in January to come back for another season with NYCFC. He emphasized his commitment to the club, stating, “This club is home for me and I am motivated to help the team and continue to strive towards our goals. We know what we are capable of as a group, and my focus is to give everything I have to help us compete and win trophies this season.”

Throughout his ten years with NYCFC, Morales has played 280 games, netting 41 goals and delivering 85 assists. He was part of the team that clinched the MLS Cup in 2021 and aided in winning the Campeones Cup title in 2022.
