Yankees Make Roster Adjustments

Jose Caballero is set to come off the injured list on Friday, while Anthony Volpe’s status remains unclear.

Following Thursday’s 2-0 defeat against the Blue Jays, the Yankees sent Spencer Jones back to Triple-A to accommodate Caballero’s return, but Volpe stayed on the roster, albeit with an uncertain role.

Manager Aaron Boone has suggested that Caballero will reclaim the starting shortstop position after spending over ten days on the IL due to a broken finger. This likely pushes Volpe into a bench role since he lacks the defensive flexibility to play elsewhere. Still, it seems he has demonstrated enough talent to warrant an extended stay on the team.

In Caballero’s words, “I’m doing really well,” which certainly gives Volpe some assurance. Boone has expressed confidence in the team, emphasizing the need for support.

Whether the Yankees might try Volpe in a different position remains to be seen, but it could be more feasible for him to do that in Triple-A.

Caballero’s capability as a super-utility player is notable, yet he has excelled as a shortstop, leading the majors with defensive runs saved as of Thursday.

Jones, unfortunately, became the odd player out during his brief stint in the majors, hitting only 4-for-24 with a .167 average and striking out twelve times. This suggests that Trent Grisham, who missed the previous game due to knee discomfort, might be ready to return soon, especially since his MRI showed no significant damage.

Grisham expressed relief, stating, “I think you’re always a little worried when something goes into your knee,” but was optimistic given the results. He did mention that he experienced some inflammation, attributing it to past bruises from the season but finding no link to Thursday’s discomfort.

Looking ahead, Boone mentioned there might be chances for adjustments with the lineup. Without Jones, Max Schumann or Amed Rosario could take on the role of the fourth outfielder, where Caballero has previously played.

Additionally, Yovanny Cruz, after pitching back-to-back games, might be optioned back to Triple-A to make room for Gerrit Cole’s debut on Friday. Cruz struggled on Thursday, giving up a double in just one-third of an inning.
