Tom Kean Jr. Comments After Long Absence from Congress

  • Rep. Tom Kean Jr. explained his 100 missed votes due to “personal medical issues.”
  • His absence has caused frustration among Republicans in both Washington and New Jersey, impacting vulnerable House districts.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged his lack of clarity regarding Kean’s situation, with strategists criticizing the communication surrounding it.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Tom Kean Jr. from New Jersey broke his silence on Thursday after missing 100 consecutive votes, attributing his absence to “personal medical issues.” His explanation was vague, and he did not specify when he would return to Congress, only stating it would be “within the next few weeks.”

At 57, Kean indicated that “doctors are confident I am on the path to a full recovery” during his first interview in 77 days. He mentioned the public’s need for transparency and expressed gratitude for constituent support.

There’s growing unease among Republicans both within Washington and back home in New Jersey about his unexplained absence, especially since Kean is facing re-election in just two weeks.

House Speaker Johnson shared that he spoke with Kean “a few weeks ago” but admitted he was unclear on the specifics of Kean’s situation. “We expect him to be back here soon,” Johnson noted, “but I don’t know the details either.”

Kean’s district is known as one of the most competitive in New Jersey, and with the primary quickly approaching, there’s no solid backup plan if he cannot continue.

A Republican consultant expressed disbelief at how poorly the situation has been handled, remarking that it has created an atmosphere of mystery. “People think something is preventing him from just reaching out, maybe sending a simple video saying he’s okay,” the consultant added.

Members of his Washington staff directed inquiries to his communications team, which has not provided any additional comments.

A Republican strategist criticized the handling of the crisis, suggesting that people are left thinking the worst. He pointed out the confusion surrounding Kean’s absence, adding that misinformation persists about his activities while being absent.

There’s been ample speculation regarding Kean’s condition, but credible information remains elusive. His chief of staff remarked to a publication that “There are no cameras where Tom is,” hinting at further ambiguity.

Kean’s father is Tom Kean Sr., a former governor, who mentioned that his son would return to Congress in about “a couple of weeks.” He emphasized that full recovery takes time post-illness, but reiterated confidence in his son’s focus on healing.

Consultant Harrison Neely reiterated that Kean is working towards a complete recovery and confirmed his intention to run for re-election.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee criticized Kean’s approach, calling it disrespectful to voters. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Republican National Committee expressed support for Kean’s privacy and emphasized the party’s commitment to continue their efforts in his district.
