Trump Backs Permanent Daylight Saving Time
President Donald Trump has voiced support for the idea of making daylight saving time a permanent fixture, aiming to eliminate the need for clock changes twice a year.
A recent bill that seeks to solidify this change was part of a larger legislative package passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, with a significant vote of 48-1 on Thursday.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked, “Vote big (48-1!) in the Energy and Commerce Committee today for legislation containing the Solar Protection Act to make Daylight Saving Time permanent! This is critical because people, cities, and states spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year forced to change their clocks. Many of these clocks are mounted on towers, and the cost of renting and using heavy equipment to do this twice a year is prohibitive!”
He emphasized that Congress should work towards “more sunshine at the end of the day.”
Trump commented further, stating, “It’s time for people to stop worrying about the ‘clock,’ not to mention all the effort and money that goes into producing this ridiculous twice-a-year change. It would be a very happy victory for the Republican Party. Accept it! We’re going with the much more popular alternative, Saving Daylight, which provides longer, brighter days. And who would object to that? This is easy!”
According to an announcement from Florida Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan, the legislation, referred to as the “sun protection law,” is part of the Nature of Substitution Amendment (AINS), which was updated and sent to the House floor by the committee.
Bipartisan support is evident for this initiative. “This bill has 32 bipartisan co-sponsors in the House, and a companion bill in the Senate, introduced by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.), has 18 bipartisan co-sponsors,” Buchanan’s statement explained.
Importantly, the proposed legislation would not mandate states that currently do not observe daylight saving time to adopt it.
Trump had called for addressing this issue publicly on Truth Social last year, emphasizing the need for action regarding the time change.
He previously stated, “The House and Senate should push hard for more daylight at the end of the day. Eliminating clock changes, which are extremely popular, and most importantly, are a huge inconvenience and a very costly event for our government!”
