Seaside Heights enlists FBI and SWAT to address Memorial Day weekend turmoil

New Jersey Coastal Town Enhances Security for Memorial Day Weekend

A coastal town in New Jersey is ramping up security ahead of the Memorial Day weekend. In light of recent disturbances involving teenagers, including a rise in spontaneous parties and unrest, officials in Seaside Heights, known for its connection to the “Jersey Shore” TV show, are taking significant precautions to maintain order.

The town is set to involve multiple law enforcement agencies, including assistance from the FBI, a SWAT team, and mounted police, to tackle the violence attributed to disruptive youths. Preparations for the holiday weekend are underway, following two summers marked by riotous behavior that overwhelmed local authorities and led to chaos on the beaches.

Mayor Tommy Vaz expressed his concerns, stating, “We’ve been preparing for this last year, and I thought we did a pretty good job, until that weekend. We had an incredible group of young people.” Last year, around 100,000 visitors flocked to the area, yet the weekend resulted in over 70 arrests, including 21 minors, after incidents that included stabbings.

In the previous summer, a false shooting report created panic, leading to crowds scattering from the beach. This prompted officials to request more extensive security measures for the upcoming holiday.

“We’re going to put everything we have into it,” said Mayor Vaz. With increased law enforcement, a strategic plan is being implemented to handle the situation effectively.

Authorities hope that the heightened police presence will help mitigate the unsanctioned gatherings gaining traction via social media, referred to as “pop-up parties.” Vaz added, “If someone posts on social media, ‘Come to Seaside Heights, bring us some booze,’ we caught it right away.”

In response to the growing trend, two officers from the Seaside Heights Police Department are routinely monitoring social media for unauthorized events, having already shut down six pop-up parties before the holiday weekend. Yet, there’s also concern that teens may gather without online organization.

“It’s happening in the suburbs and in other states,” Vaz noted. “Any good kid could end up in a group and join.” He is intent on addressing illegal or reckless behavior by ensuring that both the minors and their parents face consequences if necessary.

“This has to stop, not just in Seaside, but nationwide,” he emphasized. New legislation enabled by former Governor Phil Murphy makes parents responsible for their children’s actions, with penalties that might include jail time and fines.

Changes have also been made to local ordinances and curfews, with new regulations restricting those under 18 from being on the streets without adult supervision after 10 PM. This aims to curtail disturbances as summer approaches.

Despite the challenges, Mayor Vaz remains cautiously optimistic about a peaceful Memorial Day weekend. “We want people to know we’re a destination for families with many activities,” he said, highlighting the community’s focus on family-oriented enjoyment.

Nearby, Wildwood officials have acted similarly, enforcing a 10 PM curfew for unaccompanied minors and restricting access to the boardwalk during early morning hours to emphasize safety. They are also working to tackle unauthorized gatherings through legal avenues.

As preparations continue, local authorities aim to send a clear message: those intending to engage in disorderly conduct will be met with swift action. The focus will remain on ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience for families at the Jersey Shore this summer.
