Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the backlash stemming from her casting as Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan’s adaptation. She confidently stated, “Our cast represents the world.”
Hints about her role as the iconic figure, often celebrated as the most beautiful woman in history, first emerged earlier this month.
Recently reported criticism includes remarks from Elon Musk, who is among those questioning Nyong’o’s selection for the famous tale.
One user on X asked, “Why is Christopher Nolan so eager to replace white characters like many other directors?” Musk replied in the comments, suggesting that Nolan is motivated by a desire for accolades.
In response to her detractors, Nyong’o has stood her ground, expressing her views on the criticism surrounding her casting.
“You can’t play beauty,” she stated in an interview with Elle, where she reflected on the backlash of being cast as “the most beautiful woman in the world.”
She added, “I want to explore who the characters are. What’s beneath beauty? There’s so much more to a story like this, which has been analyzed and valued over time.”
Nyong’o emphasized the endless nature of this exploration, appreciating working with an esteemed writer like Nolan, stating, “The process begins with the script I received. That’s where my exploration started.”
She also reminded the audience that Homer’s narratives are “mythological tales” rather than strict historical interpretations.
“I completely support Chris’s vision for this story,” the “All Night” actress conveyed to the magazine, asserting that “the cast reflects the diversity of the world.”
She noted, “I don’t spend my time worrying about justifying my role. Criticism will persist regardless of my engagement with it.”
In the same interview, Nyong’o expressed her excitement about being part of “The Odyssey,” saying, “I’m thrilled to contribute to such an extraordinary story. This cast represents an epic tale for our time.”
Additionally, recent speculation about transgender actor Elliot Page taking on the role of Achilles in Nolan’s film has stirred reactions.
Kevin Sorbo weighed in on these casting rumors, expressing his disbelief regarding Page’s potential role, noting how starkly different the character is described as “a demigod with long blonde hair and unmatched strength.”
Musk has previously shared his thoughts on Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy, having remarked that the ancient poet described her as fair-skinned and golden-haired. Earlier this year, he had also suggested that Nolan had compromised his integrity regarding this casting choice.
