House Democratic Whip Clark Avoids Answering on the Necessity of Reducing Spending to Decrease Rates

House Minority Whip Discusses Rising Costs for Americans

During a recent appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) addressed concerns about affordability amid rising gas prices and interest rates, which may necessitate cuts in government spending. She stated, “The quickest way to lower costs for the American people is to resolve this war, open the Strait of Hormuz, and reduce gas prices.”

Co-host Becky Quick raised the issue, noting that the primary concern for many Americans is the increase in gas prices and interest rates. She pointed out that lowering these rates, which impact mortgages, car payments, and credit card payments, may require government expenditure cuts.

Clark responded by reiterating her earlier point about the need to end the war and find a resolution to lower gas prices. She recounted a conversation with a mother in Phoenix, Arizona, who, despite earning $100,000 a year, faced financial struggles after her husband lost his job. Burdened by work, childcare expenses, a mortgage, and student loans, the husband resorted to selling plasma to make ends meet. Clark observed that this kind of hardship has led to the emergence of many plasma donation centers. She emphasized the need to advocate for people going through these challenges, mentioning that Republicans have been under pressure related to the war, all while constituents are struggling to afford basic necessities like gas for commuting and taking their children to school. She expressed concern that the current administration appears to overlook these difficulties, focusing instead on extravagant projects.
