Hurricanes Advance to Eastern Conference Finals with OT Win
In Raleigh, N.C., Nikolaj Ehlers found some space in the center of the ice and sent the puck past Jakub Dobes just 3:29 into overtime, securing a 3-2 victory for the Carolina Hurricanes over the Montreal Canadiens. This win allows the Hurricanes to move on to the Eastern Conference finals, one game at a time.
Ehlers, who played a critical role as a free agent addition, scored twice in the game. His first goal showcased a remarkable individual effort against two defenders from Montreal in the second period.
When the game hit overtime, Ehlers took charge, leading the team toward the decisive goal.
The game-winning play started when Jalen Chatfield sent the puck back into the neutral zone. Mark Jankowski quickly redirected it, setting Ehlers up as he charged into the offensive zone, allowing for a clean shot on Dobes for the win.
Another contributor for Carolina was Eric Robinson, who also found the net during the match. Carolina faced significant pressure as they sought to rebound from a 6-2 loss in the series opener just days prior—an outcome that only added to their lengthy struggle in the Eastern Finals.
With this victory, the series now heads to Canada for Game 3 on Monday.
For Montreal, Josh Anderson scored both goals, including one that equalized at 12:51 in the third period, pushing the game into overtime.
In their previous matchup, the Canadiens had taken Game 1 decisively, jumping to an early lead with four goals within the first 11 and a half minutes, capitalizing on a lengthy wait for the start of the series while exploiting Carolina’s 11-day break. They managed several high-quality scoring opportunities, including breakaways against Carolina’s Frederik Andersen.
However, the Hurricanes seemed to regain their rhythm in this game, limiting Montreal to just 12 shots and conceding far fewer quick transition opportunities than in Game 1.
