District Attorney starts inquiry into aerospace firm linked to chemical tank leak

Investigation Launched into Aerospace Company Amid Chemical Scare

Prosecutors in Orange County have initiated an investigation into an aerospace firm linked to a chemical emergency in Garden Grove. This incident prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents as crews raced to prevent a possible explosion.

District Attorney Todd Spitzer described the situation as “horrifying” and announced on Saturday that his office would be looking into GKN Aerospace, particularly focusing on the overheated chemical tank that caused the mass evacuation.

Spitzer stated, “It’s hard to believe that a responsible defense contractor, which produces aircraft windows and handles volatile chemicals, would let a failure occur in the cooling system meant to keep chemicals at safe levels.” He shared these thoughts during an interview with a local publication.

He further emphasized the substantial costs arising from this incident, expressing his commitment to ensure that affected people receive support in their recovery efforts.

The prosecutor’s office has set up a hotline for factory workers or anyone with insider knowledge regarding the events leading up to the emergency. They are particularly interested in details about maintenance of tanks and safety systems, as well as any potential warnings that might have been overlooked before failures took place.

Tipsters are encouraged to use the anonymous hotline, email the office, or provide information online.

On Saturday, Spitzer visited the command center where first responders were monitoring chemical tanks that still posed a risk of explosion. Collaborations were also in place with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to gather drone footage and detailed images of the tank and cooling systems.

In response to the expanding danger zone, which now covers about 10 square miles encompassing Garden Grove, Anaheim, Stanton, Cypress, Buena Park, and Westminster, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area.
