Announcers oddly avoid mentioning Taylor Swift's name during Knicks-Cavaliers game

ESPN’s Slip Sparks Swiftie Outrage

During the first quarter of the Eastern Conference finals Game 3 on Saturday, ESPN inadvertently stirred controversy by referring to Taylor Swift as “Travis Kelce’s fiancée,” igniting a wave of reactions on social media.

The broadcast featured Swift and Kelce courtside at Rocket Arena, but commentators Mike Breen and Richard Jefferson notably avoided mentioning Swift by name.

“Travis Kelce and his fiancée are coming to the game,” Breen announced as the camera panned to the couple. Jefferson added, “It’s always great to see Travis and his girlfriend in the building.”

Fans quickly criticized the duo on social platforms for seemingly failing to acknowledge Swift’s fame and recognition. Comments ranged from “Richard Jefferson not calling Taylor Swift by her name is a corny joke,” to others questioning, “Aren’t announcers at #Knicks games allowed to say Taylor Swift’s name? Oh my god.”

One viewer theorized that the announcers’ reticence was intentional, recalling how Jefferson mentioned her name multiple times throughout the game. “They tripled it up and I feel like the lols are definitely intentional. But I don’t understand why ESPN would want that,” the user remarked.

Swift and Kelce’s appearance comes ahead of their wedding planned for July 3, as previously reported by Page Six. Kelce, originally from Ohio, has a history of attending Cavaliers games, where he and his brother Jason were honored with a bobblehead night during the 2023-24 NBA season.

As for the game, the Cavaliers led at halftime with a score of 60-54. OG Anunoby was the standout for the Knicks, scoring 13 points, while Kelce was caught on the video board drinking a beer during the second half. The Knicks eventually secured a 121-108 victory.
