Shooting Incident Near the White House
A man, reportedly suffering from mental health issues and claiming to be Jesus Christ, opened fire outside the White House on Saturday evening. He was swiftly subdued by gunfire from Secret Service agents, according to various sources.
Nasir Best, aged 21, began behaving erratically on Northwest 17th Street before the shooting, which occurred around 6:10 p.m. He didn’t evade the gunfire for long, as federal agents responded rapidly. Tragically, at least one innocent bystander was seriously injured during the chaos.
The motive for Best’s actions remains unclear. Sources indicate that he had a history of mental illness and was known to the Secret Service for frequently loitering near immigration offices, having previously violated a court order to stay away from the White House.
“The FBI is on site assisting the Secret Service regarding shots fired near the White House grounds. We’ll keep the public updated,” a spokesperson announced.
The sound of gunfire startled reporters present at the White House. In fact, an ABC reporter was noted diving for cover while broadcasting live.
“I was recording a social media video on the North Lawn when I suddenly heard multiple shots,” said Selina Wang, the ABC correspondent. “It felt like dozens of gunshots. We had to run to the press conference room.” The White House was quickly placed on lockdown as a safety precaution, with reporters moving to a secure area. The lockdown was lifted about 30 minutes later, shortly after President Trump had shared details of a peace deal with Iran on social media.
Previously, Best had faced legal issues, including a charge of obstructing traffic and a later arrest for trespassing.
Witnesses reported that stray gunfire hit civilians nearby, intensifying the scene’s chaos. Some reporters were observed ducking for cover during the ordeal, while Secret Service instructed them to regroup quickly.
Although it’s uncertain if the shooting had any political dimensions, reactions have echoed across the political spectrum, with leaders denouncing the violence. This incident adds to a troubling series of violent threats against political figures, including a recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner and an attempted assassination against Trump in July 2024.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson expressed appreciation for the Secret Service’s prompt action. “We owe our thanks to those brave agents who acted decisively to protect President Trump. We also keep the victims of this senseless violence in our thoughts,” he stated.
Congresswoman Betty McCollum advocated for unification, stating, “It’s important that our differences are resolved at the voting booth, not through violence.”
This shooting highlights ongoing concerns regarding political violence in the country, as it follows a series of alarming events related to prominent figures.
President Trump acknowledged law enforcement’s quick response, emphasizing the need for maximum security for future presidents and national sites. “This incident reiterates the importance of safety in Washington, D.C.,” he remarked on social media.
