Patton Oswalt Critiques Bill Maher’s Approach to Trump
This week, comedian Patton Oswalt took aim at “Real Time” host Bill Maher, suggesting that Maher’s attempts to “appease” Donald Trump were misguided. Oswalt expressed that Maher’s belief he could find common ground with Trump could leave him vulnerable to attacks.
During an interview with SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah, Oswalt remarked, “Trump is targeting Bill Maher because he tried to please him, likely with good intentions, but that strategy just doesn’t work.” He contrasted Maher’s tactics with those of Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, who, while also critical of Trump, seem to receive the brunt of Trump’s ire because they offer no admiration.
Oswalt added, “Colbert and Kimmel…Trump can’t stand them, but it’s because they don’t shower him with praise. He craves that adoration, yet when he gets it, he has no respect for those who give it, likely due to deeper self-hatred.” He advises sticking to one’s principles, contending that “this guy sucks,” and that avoiding Trump is ultimately beneficial, especially since doing business with him can lead to ruin.
Oswalt’s remarks seemed to refer to a situation from February, where Trump attacked Maher on “Truth Social.” This followed Maher’s occasional harsh comments after they dined together at the White House last year.
At that time, Trump criticized Maher for mocking him, particularly over a joke about China and hockey in Canada, calling their dinner a “waste of time” and claiming Maher was anxious during their encounter. Maher, reflecting on the incident, said, “I think we might need to refine that one a bit.”
Maher also defended himself against Trump’s criticisms, stating, “He got upset and called our dinner a waste. I, on the other hand, didn’t feel that way.” He acknowledged the criticism of his ratings, noting, “Things haven’t exactly been smooth, but I’ve continued to voice my dissent.” Representatives for Maher’s show did not respond when asked for comment.
