Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black Celebrate 35 Years of Marriage with New Movie
For Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black, their journey together started with a simple promise nearly 35 years ago. The couple, both country music stars and former “Knots Landing” actors, are making waves again with a new Lifetime movie titled “When I Said I Do,” which draws inspiration from their 1999 duet. The film follows Ali Corey, a widowed K-9 handler played by Sarah Drew, who navigates grief and finds love again after losing her husband in the line of duty.
As executive producers of the film, Clint and Lisa take on special appearances as themselves and even host a romance podcast.
“Several years ago, Clint wrote this song and invited me to sing it with him. To be honest, I was a bit scared,” the actress shared, reflecting on their collaboration. “Thankfully, I agreed. Looking back, it’s gratifying to see how successful this film has become—chart success, awards, and even couples renewing their vows because of it. It’s a real honor to be a part of this.”
Clint and Lisa crossed paths backstage after one of Clint’s concerts on New Year’s Eve in 1990, eventually tying the knot on October 20, 1991. They welcomed their daughter, Lily Pearl Black, in 2001, marking over three decades of shared experiences together.
“One key to our marriage is communication,” Clint shared. “It might seem straightforward, but it’s crucial to discuss everything. I remember getting advice from Roy Rogers who said, ‘Never go to bed angry.’ That’s solid advice; you can’t just walk away from discussions. Misunderstandings happen, and it’s important to talk them out.”
Lisa echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of dialogue. “We do have misunderstandings, but we can always clarify what the other meant. It’s vital to know that neither of us ever intended to hurt each other. Simply explaining oneself can change everything.”
“At the core of our relationship is communication, and he’s my best friend. Treating each other this way fosters respect and trust, and I think that’s why we’re still here, almost 35 years later,” she added.
The couple has faced their own share of heartbreak. In Clint’s upcoming memoir, “Killin’ Time: My Life and Music,” he reveals that they experienced four pregnancy losses before having Lily. They decided to keep those difficulties private to maintain hope. “We got through it together,” Clint wrote.
“In the beginning, we both knew we wanted children,” Lisa noted. “Clint joked about having a dog to avoid jail time while we went out. But when we made the decision to become parents, it felt urgent.”
Reflecting on their parenting journey, Lisa said, “Clint was there for Lily’s first three years—I’m so grateful for that time. It was a special period for us.” Even today, she feels that her husband gives her a reason to fall in love all over again each day.
It seems they’ve built their lives around each other and their daughter. “The three of us have this wonderful bond,” she beamed. “I thank God for each day. Lily just turned 25, she’s inherited her father’s talent for writing and has this incredible voice. Sure, I hoped she’d be a veterinarian at one point, but she’s got an amazing gift for music.”
While navigating the complexities of fame and family, they always maintain a priority on their relationship. “Even after all these years, we still make efforts for each other,” Lisa explained. “That’s crucial. It’s about communicating through everything.”
Lisa reminisced about their first meeting, describing it as cinematic. Time seemed to slow, and the world around them faded. Their connection grew deep over time and led them to marriage less than a year after their first date.
“We were both established in our careers and had experienced life, which I think helped us mature together—it aligned us quickly on values and morals.”
Despite the day-to-day challenges, they find joy in the small moments—dinner, movies, or even reluctant shopping trips. “We recognize how lucky we are, considering the hurdles we’ve faced together,” Lisa said. Their love, laughter, and mutual respect form the foundation of their enduring partnership, making every shared experience special.
