Iranian President: 'Prepared to Assure the World' We Are Not Pursuing Nuclear Weapons

Iran and U.S. Peace Deal Talks Progressing

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has indicated that discussions regarding a potential peace agreement between Iran and the United States seem to be advancing. He emphasized that Iran is “ready” to assure the world that it does not aim to develop nuclear weapons.

On Saturday, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned that “an agreement is almost complete” with Iran’s current leadership. While he didn’t disclose specific details, a briefing with U.S. officials suggested that Iranian negotiators have hinted at abandoning the nuclear program and transferring enriched uranium.

Tehran has yet to officially confirm the specifics of the memorandum of understanding being discussed, but Pezeshkian has revealed that his administration is open to such a deal.

Reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Pezeshkian stated, “Before the martyrdom of Iran’s late Ayatollah Khamenei, we declared our readiness and now reiterate that we do not seek nuclear weapons.”

He further insisted that Iran is not trying to destabilize the region but did not detail what actions could be taken to affirm its commitment to avoiding a nuclear path.

Additionally, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Bacaei said they are in the final stages of finalizing a memorandum of understanding with the U.S. He noted, “We’re finalizing the memorandum and the discussions are mainly focused on ending the war.”

Bacaei downplayed notions that Iran’s nuclear ambitions are being negotiated, stating: “While we recognize that our nuclear issue has been a pretext for conflicts against Iran, we’ve sensibly chosen to prioritize urgent matters: ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon.”

According to CBS News’ senior correspondent Jennifer Jacobs, Washington believes that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has agreed to the main principles of a potential peace agreement, which includes the disposal of enriched uranium.

U.S. officials are reportedly confident about persuading Iran to give up its nuclear goals. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while on a diplomatic mission to India, commented, “The ultimate goal is that Iran will never have nuclear weapons.” He thinks there’s been some progress toward that outcome but warned that any agreement still requires “full acceptance and compliance by Iran.”

Rubio remarked, “There’s no one stronger on this issue than President Trump,” arguing that suggesting a deal would empower Iran’s nuclear ambitions is unrealistic based on Trump’s previous actions.

President Trump reiterated his stance that Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons, claiming that this situation is a result of the deal struck by former President Obama, which he criticized as the “exact opposite” of what’s necessary.

“Negotiations are proceeding orderly, and I’ve advised delegates to take their time. The blockade will remain until we have a certified and signed agreement,” Trump stated. He emphasized that both parties need to be cautious and correct in their negotiations, reinforcing that there can be no mistakes.

Overall, relations with Iran appear to be evolving towards a more professional and productive space, yet the commitment to avoid nuclear armament remains paramount.
