The tension between Trump and Netanyahu was a deliberate tactic aimed at Iran, according to an analyst.

Trump to talk with Netanyahu while military options on Iran are being evaluated

Escalating Tensions Between Trump and Netanyahu

Recent developments, including a tense phone conversation between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggest a possible strain in their relationship regarding Iran. A prominent defense analyst indicated that these events might be part of a strategic maneuver intended to keep Tehran uncertain about the U.S.’s next steps.

Kobi Michael, a senior fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies, noted that over the weekend, there seems to have been a synchronization in their positions. Trump and Netanyahu reportedly aligned their approaches by Sunday.

In high-stakes negotiations over Iran and plans for Gaza, difficult discussions were held about a U.S. proposal intended to be communicated to Iran through Pakistan. Interestingly, Netanyahu allegedly dismissed this proposal, leaning instead towards military action aimed at undermining Iran’s infrastructure.

According to a U.S. official, after the call, it was evident Netanyahu was quite frustrated. There were also reports suggesting that Israel has been sidelined in U.S.-Iran talks, especially following an unsuccessful joint effort to instigate regime change in Iran that Netanyahu had advocated for prior to conflict escalation.

Netanyahu publicly expressed solidarity with the Biden administration, reiterating a unified American-Israeli stance. “Our partnership,” he remarked, “has been proven on the battlefield and is stronger than ever. My policy remains unchanged: Iran will not obtain nuclear weapons.”

Michael viewed the leaks and the resulting public discord as a tactic aimed at confusing Tehran. The message implied by Trump and Netanyahu’s supposed disagreement may lead Iran to miscalculate future military actions.

During their recent phone call, Trump assured Netanyahu that any final agreement with Iran would essentially dismantle Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. Furthermore, he reasserted Israel’s right to protect itself from threats, including those from Lebanon.

After the conversation, Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Trump for his unwavering commitment to Israel’s security. Michael interpreted Netanyahu’s latest comments as an effort to alleviate concerns and clarify misunderstandings among the Israeli public about U.S. intentions.

However, skepticism lingers in Israel regarding whether any gap between the U.S. and Iran can truly be resolved, or if Trump will ultimately relent to Iran’s demands.
