Golden Knights Overcome Deficit to Edge Out Avalanche

LAS VEGAS — The Golden Knights showcased their resilience once again during their latest playoff game, winning with a variety of strategies to secure victory. Coach John Tortorella, affectionately known as Toots, summed it up with a bit of flair.

“This is a game where we showed some ball,” he said after their impressive comeback.

Las Vegas managed to turn the tables on Colorado, coming back from a three-point deficit to win 5-3 on Sunday night. This victory has brought them one step closer to their third Stanley Cup Finals appearance in nine years, especially after Tomas Hertl broke the tie at 8:21 in the third period.

“I feel really good right now,” said Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner. “But we know we’re up against a tough hockey team. The next game is going to be tougher, so we need to take a moment to enjoy this, then get ready for the challenge ahead.”

As they prepare for the next matchup, the Golden Knights are looking to take down the Presidents Trophy winners. It’s worth noting that the last team to achieve both the Presidents Trophy and Stanley Cup in the same season was Chicago in 2013.

On the flip side, Colorado aims to become the fifth team to win a series after being down 0-3. The last to do so was Los Angeles in 2014, who eliminated San Jose in the first round.

Interestingly, the Golden Knights had previously struggled in the playoffs when trailing by three, and Colorado had a notable 1-for-74 record in maintaining leads like that.

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar expressed how challenging the situation felt for his team, stating their morale was “as low as you can get,” and highlighted the uphill battle ahead. “The next 24 to 36 hours will be crucial for us to regroup,” he added.

Another concern for Colorado is Nathan MacKinnon’s health. After a solid postseason and leading in points during the regular season, he continued to play through an injury sustained when a puck hit his knee.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas has shown impressive tenacity on the road, even securing a postseason spot despite trailing in many of their games. They’ve recently made comebacks in their last two encounters with Colorado, but managed just one win in Game 2.

“We’ve been down a lot throughout the season,” Hertl reflected. “Even after the first game where we trailed 3-0, we knew we had it in us to bounce back.”

In this recent game, Hertl, Mark Stone, and William Karlsson each contributed a goal and an assist, with Keegan Kolesar and Brett Howden also finding the net. Meanwhile, Mitch Marner and Kaydan Korczak provided two assists each, and goaltender Carter Hart had an impressive 32 saves.

Notably, Stone’s goal marked his return from an injury sustained earlier in the series, while Kolesar celebrated his first postseason point after a lengthy scoring drought.

For the Avalanche, Gabriel Landeskog, Nazem Kadri, and Jack Drury managed to score, with Devon Toews assisting twice. Scott Wedgwood protected the net with 18 saves.

Despite a strong start, the Avalanche quickly found themselves managing a three-point cushion, although the Golden Knights had a goal negated by a video review. Colorado then looked to control the game, but Las Vegas responded aggressively with a power-play goal just moments into the second period, evening the score.

With the Golden Knights on a roll, Hertl seized the moment to clinch the game for his team, putting them in a favorable position with the potential to win the series in the upcoming games.

“I want you to appreciate the fight they displayed against a solid hockey club,” Tortorella remarked, hinting at the journey ahead as he prepares for practice the following day.

Before the game, a moment of silence was held to honor Las Vegas’s own Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR champion, who recently passed away at the age of 41 due to complications from pneumonia.
