How Gregg Popovich aided the Spurs in reaching the Western Conference finals with a dominant Game 4: ‘That’s not fair’

Spurs Respond to Popovich’s Challenge

When Pop speaks, the Spurs pay attention.

After a 123-108 defeat against the Thunder in Game 3, Gregg Popovich, the former Hall of Fame coach, finally expressed his frustration with the team this season.

His words seemed to resonate strongly, as the Spurs secured a 103-82 victory in Game 4, leveling the series at 2-2.

Spurs star De’Aaron Fox reflected on the moment, saying, “We lost Game 3, but for the first time, he walked into the locker room and said, ‘That’s BS. That’s not how we play basketball.’ He clearly chose the right words.” This was a noteworthy moment for the team, as it was Popovich’s first time addressing them immediately after a game this season.

Interestingly, Popovich didn’t actively coach from the sidelines during Game 4; he was seated in a plush box next to Tim Duncan. A video of him speaking with star center Victor Wembanyama circulated widely on social media, highlighting the bond and continued influence he has.

Despite having stepped down as coach in May 2025 due to health reasons, Popovich’s presence still looms large. He coached Wembanyama during his first full season and has maintained close ties with the team.

Reflecting on their Game 3 loss, Fox said, “Every team struggles, but I think that game was mentally one of our worst. Pop saw it; we all saw it. It weighed on us.” He emphasized the need to enter Game 4 with the right mindset, even if losing was a possibility. The way they lost in Game 3 felt particularly painful, leaving a mark on everyone in the locker room.

Popovich’s coaching legacy, which includes five championships since taking the reins in December 1996, remains pivotal for the Spurs.

Now, the Spurs are heading back to Oklahoma City for Game 5.
