Commemoration of George Floyd’s Death in Minneapolis
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey reflected on the sixth anniversary of George Floyd’s death, asserting that the city has undergone significant change since that pivotal moment. He noted that the ongoing dialogue about racial justice has reignited.
“We remember George Floyd, who was killed by a former police officer six years ago. That moment changed our city forever,” Frey shared on social media.
He emphasized that Minneapolis has had to confront uncomfortable truths regarding race, policing, and trust, which have spurred hard conversations and a push for accountability. “Since Mr. Floyd’s murder, we’ve been challenged not only to claim we’ve changed but to actually demonstrate it,” he added.
Floyd, a Black man, encountered former officer Derek Chauvin after being accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin, who is white, forcibly restrained Floyd, pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes—a scene recorded on disturbing footage.
During the encounter, Floyd famously pleaded, “I can’t breathe.”
The medical examiner classified his death as a homicide, citing cardiopulmonary arrest as the cause, although they noted that drug use—specifically fentanyl and methamphetamine—may have contributed. In contrast, a medical examiner hired by Floyd’s family determined that asphyxia was the primary cause of death, disputing the impact of drugs.
Chauvin is currently incarcerated, serving a sentence of 22-and-a-half years after being found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and murder charges.
“We’ve made efforts to reform our police force and rebuild trust within the community, yet challenges remain,” Frey stated. He also mentioned ongoing development efforts at George Floyd Square, where a rebuilding process is underway.
In his closing remarks, the mayor reflected on the lingering impact of Floyd’s death on the city and expressed a commitment to continue working towards a safer, more accountable Minneapolis for its residents.
Floyd’s death in 2020 led to widespread unrest across the nation. Frey was serving as mayor during those turbulent times. Commentary online took a divisive turn, with some voices critiquing Frey’s recognition of Floyd. Figures like Tomi Lahren and Laura Loomer expressed skepticism and challenged the narrative surrounding Floyd’s passing, attributing it to drug use rather than the actions of police.
