Neal McDonough Reflects on Life’s Challenges
In a recent chat, actor Neal McDonough, at 60, opened up about some of the darker moments he’s faced in his life and career. He participated in a biopic about Jimmy Stewart, a role he took on during a period when he thought his Hollywood career was over.
“Honestly, I was just thinking about when the bars would open,” he shared. “I had been fired from a show because I didn’t kiss women, and that led to people viewing me as a religious fanatic. I mean, I adore my wife, but no one seemed to get that.”
McDonough admitted he had long been a heavy drinker, but things escalated after the backlash for not kissing a co-star. “I lost my house, my car—everything,” he revealed.
Now starring in the biopic “Jimmy,” which celebrates Stewart’s 118th birthday, McDonough reflected on the kindness he received during his low points. A friend, actor Luke Perry, offered him shelter when he lost his home.
“It was around the time ‘Justified’ came out, and I felt completely worthless for not being able to provide for my family,” he shared. “I had lost everything, all those nice things I’d collected over the years, and it tore me apart. The feeling of letting down my family was crushing.”
After some hard truths from his wife, McDonough realized he needed to shift his focus to serving God rather than himself. He credits his wife, whom he has been married to for over 25 years, for motivating him to get sober. “She told me, ‘It’s us or the bottle. Make your choice,'” he said. “I’ve never looked back since.”
“I’m incredibly fortunate to have an amazing wife,” McDonough continued. “I could ramble on about this forever. She’s my good luck charm. Through all my struggles, here I am, making movies alongside her, which is just incredible.”
The couple collaborates as producing partners on various projects like “Boon,” “The Warrant: Breaker’s Law,” and “The Last Rodeo.” They first crossed paths while working on “Band of Brothers” and began dating shortly after, eventually marrying in December 2003. Now, they have five children together.
Reflecting on his experience in producing the Jimmy Stewart story, McDonough mentioned how it allowed him to delve deeply into Stewart’s life, especially regarding his experiences before World War II. “We learned so much about what Jimmy went through, and I could relate to him more,” McDonough said. “This birthday celebration holds more significance for me now.” He expressed gratitude for having the chance to explore Stewart’s life through KJ Apa’s remarkable performance.
