Domestic Violence Charges Against Alabama Sheriff-Elect’s Wife
The wife of Alabama’s newly elected sheriff has been taken into custody on domestic violence charges, and this all unfolded less than a week after her husband won against the incumbent he had previously dismissed for defiance.
Aggie “Karyn” Hunt, 36, spouse of Lee County Sheriff-elect Cam Hunt, faced misdemeanor domestic violence charges on Monday, which could result in up to a year in jail, according to reports.
The mother of three was arrested late at night at the county jail, only to be released a day later. Details regarding the exact charges have not been disclosed.
“We can confirm that Aggie Hunt has been arrested for domestic violence,” stated Opelika Police Chief Jonathan Clifton. He emphasized that due to the nature of the incident, further details would remain private to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
The sheriff-elect, a Marine Corps veteran and devout Christian, characterized his wife’s situation as a “private family matter” involving people he cares about deeply. He expressed that out of respect, they wouldn’t share further details publicly or invite rumors on social media.
Cam Hunt reassured others, “I’m doing fine, the kids are fine, and Karyn is fine.” His focus now seems to be on his family and their path forward, and he expressed gratitude for the support and prayers he has received.
This incident follows closely after Cam Hunt’s victory over Jay Jones, an incumbent sheriff for nearly three decades, winning by a slight margin of 50.84% to 49.16% in the Republican primary. Hunt had actually been removed from his position by Jones last year after he began campaigning against him.
Jones commented that Hunt could’ve chosen to resign prior to starting his campaign, making his own termination unnecessary. He insisted that such campaigning could lead to discord and disrupt team unity within the department.
