Alex Mealer Advances in House Race
Alex Mealer, a veteran and energy executive endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has taken a significant step toward winning a House seat. In a Republican primary runoff held on Tuesday, Mealer triumphed over state Representative Briscoe Cain, according to reports.
This election, set in a heavily Republican district, served as another gauge of Trump’s influence, which has been pivotal in several notable races this year. Trump had endorsed Mealer before the initial voting phase in March, where she secured the highest percentage with 36% of the votes.
Mealer was backed notably by the conservative Growth Club, one of the prominent financial supporters in the Republican primaries. Meanwhile, Rep. Jim Jordan from Ohio also lent his support during her campaign.
Mealer didn’t achieve enough votes for an outright win, leading to the runoff against Cain, who placed second with 31%. Cain has represented his district in the Texas House since 2017, receiving endorsements from figures such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott. He’s known as one of the state’s more conservative lawmakers, claiming support from groups like the National Rifle Association and the Texas Homeschool Coalition PAC.
The winner of this primary will contend against environmental activist Leticia Gutierrez in the general election. The newly redefined district is anticipated to remain under Republican control and is classified as uncompetitive by the Cook Political Report. In fact, Trump would have led in this district by nearly 20 points in the upcoming 2024 election.
Last year, Republicans redrew the boundaries of Democratic-leaning districts as part of a broader strategy, effectively displacing veteran Texas Democratic Representative Al Green from the area he had represented for over two decades.
In a related note, Greene opted to run against Rep. Christian Menefee, a Democrat, for Houston’s only Democratic-held seat, which also had its own runoff election on Tuesday. For context, Mealer had a close loss in the 2022 race for Harris County judge against Lina Hidalgo, who had also received Trump’s endorsement.
