Trump criticizes poor Democratic leadership in Chicago after a driver reportedly crashes into five police officers during a 'teen takeover' event.

President Trump criticized the Democratic leadership in Chicago, calling it “terrible,” and urged for federal intervention after an 18-year-old, Rashad Johnson, allegedly attacked five police officers during a chaotic event described as a “teen takeover” over Memorial Day weekend.

Trump directed his ire at Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson in response to the arrest of Johnson, who has been charged with attempted murder for an attack that occurred early Sunday morning.

“Teenagers hijacked Chicago. 5 police officers seriously injured. Mayor and governor are terrible. Call for help!” Trump stated on social media.

On Saturday night into Sunday, hundreds of teenagers flooded the streets of Chicago’s West Side, and violence quickly ensued, reflecting a troubling trend in various U.S. cities.

Allegedly, Johnson punched five police officers trying to disperse the unlawful gathering.

Authorities reported that Johnson, from the suburb of Plainfield, Illinois, jumped a curb and crashed into a police vehicle, a utility pole, and a fence.

He was arrested just after 3:20 a.m. and faced multiple charges, including five counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

Chicago police confirmed that the five officers were treated at a hospital and were in good condition.

Multiple similar “teen takeovers” occurred in the early hours, with 53 people arrested at a gathering in nearby Hyde Park, according to reports.

Among the arrested were 21 individuals, including 10 juveniles, with charges related to disorderly conduct and other misdemeanors ranging from reckless behavior to trespassing.

The ages of those arrested spanned from 13 to 28, highlighting the wide demographic involved.

Despite these incidents, Mayor Johnson pointed out that Chicago reported zero homicides over the weekend, while there were multiple shootings resulting in a total of 37 fatalities.

“Republicans need to stop using pain and fear to distract from the consequences of economic decline and eternal war,” he expressed online.

The mayor highlighted the city’s commitment to youth investment and community strengthening, though he acknowledged there’s more to be done.

He previously attributed some of the issues to both teenagers and their parents, expressing the importance of accountability for large gatherings that can become dangerous.

Trump mentioned he hadn’t yet specified what type of federal aid he would offer, but has previously hinted at deploying the National Guard to Chicago due to ongoing concerns.

Trump’s previous efforts to mobilize troops faced opposition. Pritzker labeled him a “wannabe dictator,” suggesting Trump was threatening to engage in conflict with cities.

Significantly, the Supreme Court dismissed Trump’s attempts to send the National Guard, stating that the federal government had no valid authority in the situation.

After that ruling, Trump withdrew troops from several cities, including Chicago, but warned it was a temporary pause.

Reflecting on the situation, Trump maintained that without federal intervention, significant urban issues would persist, indicating a readiness to return if crime worsens.

He expressed disbelief at the incompetence of city and state leaders, emphasizing the need for effective leadership in these circumstances.
