Brewers Reliever Abner Uribe Sparks Controversy with Wild Celebration
In today’s baseball scene, celebrations are all the rage, and dissenters often find themselves on the wrong side of the argument. This was certainly the case with Milwaukee Brewers reliever Abner Uribe, who stretched the boundaries of expectation during a game on Tuesday.
While the Brewers were comfortably ahead 6-0 in the eighth inning, the 25-year-old Uribe struck out Alec Burleson and then launched into a series of exaggerated WWE-inspired groin chops. It was, to say the least, a bold move.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy was less than thrilled. “I don’t know what hit him,” Murphy remarked post-game. “He’s an emotional guy, but that… that’s not what we do. We felt embarrassed. What are we doing in a 6-0 game?”
Uribe later expressed remorse, apologizing to his teammates for his antics. Yet, he also took issue with Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol’s criticism. “First and foremost, everyone here knows me and my emotional side,” Uribe explained. “I owe an apology to the Brewers, my teammates, the manager, and everyone involved. I get that it wasn’t appropriate to act like that.”
The Brewers’ relief corps has seen its share of drama. Back in May 2024, Jose Siri had a notorious confrontation with Uribe in the dugout. “I think it’s unprofessional for their coach to come into our dugout and signal that he’s going to hit our players,” Uribe remarked, highlighting the ongoing tensions.
Fans quickly divided over Uribe’s celebration. Many who sided with Murphy found themselves labeled as “wet blankets” on social media. “Even we Brewers fans are scratching our heads over this,” one user commented. Others seemed to embrace the chaos, with one fan stating, “If they need to sacrifice us tomorrow, so be it. It means it worked.”
Despite the uproar, some fans raised valid points about Uribe’s skills. With a 4.42 ERA in 18.1 innings this season—far from impressive—it raised questions about whether he had the talent to justify such defiance.
Nonetheless, the Brewers secured a 6-0 win, putting that controversy behind them, at least for the night. It seems Uribe’s performance was enough for him to stay in the spotlight, for better or worse.
