The way Crystal Hanlon from Home Depot is achieving her American dream

Through July 4, the Post, in partnership with the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, showcases various Americans, including residents from Georgia, sharing their perspectives on the American Dream.

Opportunity really defines the American Dream. You can start with nothing and grow a multi-million dollar business. Honestly, where else can you do that? America is, without a doubt, the best place for those dreams to become reality. I’ve experienced this firsthand.

Crystal Hanlon, the Senior Vice President of Culture and Values at Home Depot, began her journey as a cashier during college. She shared, “I played every role in the store.”

Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, after losing her mother, her family moved to Texas. She was the youngest of seven, raised by her sisters, who supported her during a crucial time when life could have taken a different turn.

Eventually, at the University of Houston, she aspired to become a physical therapist. Back then, she lived a frugal life, often eating ramen for just a dollar. Times were tough.

One day, she noticed a “Now Hiring” sign at a hardware store. Needing extra cash to finish school, she took the job as a cashier for $5 an hour, not planning to linger. However, her involvement in a Team Depot project, where they built a wheelchair ramp for a young boy, struck a chord. Seeing his joy, along with his emotional parents, made her feel part of something significant, leading her to stay on.

Throughout her time, she explored every position—from manager to district manager—and ultimately became VP across two regions, gaining knowledge and experience over her 40-year career.

Many don’t realize that retail can fulfill your aspirations. For me, the American Dream represents being able to care for your loved ones while achieving success. And success, I think, means more than just financial wealth.

The American Dream Video Project features genuine experiences that highlight pathways to opportunity. This initiative by the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream (MCAAD) commemorates America’s 250th anniversary and serves as a cultural hub in Washington, DC, showcasing interactive exhibits and narratives on pursuing the American Dream.
