Samuel L. Jackson Supports Karen Bass for L.A. Mayor: 'A Person Who Gets What the Community Needs'

Samuel L. Jackson Endorses Karen Bass for LA Mayor

Samuel L. Jackson, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, publicly backed Karen Bass in her re-election campaign for mayor of Los Angeles on Tuesday. In a video announcement, Jackson highlighted Bass as “someone who understands government.”

“This is a time when we need someone who understands government and who understands the needs of the people,” Jackson stated in the video. “Someone who goes out into the streets and brings people together. Not someone who divides people. Karen Bass is that person. Karen Bass for mayor.”

Bass expressed her gratitude for Jackson’s endorsement via social media. She mentioned, “I am honored to receive support from my dear friend. Sam has always shown up for people and causes he believes in. And I’m grateful that he showed up for Los Angeles. I agree on the changes we are working to bring to Los Angeles. That means getting more people off the streets into housing and connecting them to comprehensive services. That means more affordable housing will be built. And that means continuing to reduce crime to historic lows.”

Interestingly, this endorsement comes months after a controversial incident. Jackson referred to Bass as “someone who understands government” amid reports that she had instructed officials to soften the content of an after-action report following significant wildfires in January 2025. Reports indicated that the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) had removed several critical comments to present a more favorable narrative.

For instance, phrases indicating that decisions made regarding personnel deployment prior to extreme weather conditions were “not consistent” with departmental policies were removed. Additionally, some sections detailing delays faced by crew members on the day of the fires were edited. The term “failures” was changed to “key challenges,” and adjustments were made to suggest compliance with national safety guidelines.

The initial draft of this report was overseen by then-interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva, following Bass’s dismissal of the previous chief. A suggestion was made to replace an unflattering image of a burning palm tree on the cover with a more positive depiction of firefighters. This report underwent seven revisions prior to its final version, details of which have not been disclosed.

According to reports, Bass’s actions reportedly stemmed from concerns that the findings might expose the city to legal risks. Despite consistent denial from Bass about directing these edits, sources close to the situation indicated otherwise.

After reviewing the original draft, it was indicated that Bass raised concerns with the interim Fire Chief about the report potentially highlighting the city’s failures. One insider mentioned that two individuals close to the mayor confirmed she had influenced the report’s editing process.

Some sources have expressed serious doubts regarding Bass’s honesty about her role in modifying the report. The stakes could rise if the issue ends up in court, as two confidants may be called to testify. Bass’s office, however, has denied any suggestion that she requested changes to the report.
