Democrat Manny Lutinel Takes Aim at Congress in Colorado’s 8th District
Manny Lutinel, a Democrat, is campaigning for a seat in Congress representing Colorado’s 8th Congressional District. This area includes significant agricultural regions and a major oil-producing area. Lutinel promotes a pro-vegan stance while critiquing livestock farming practices.
In a recent podcast, Lutinel shared insights about his vegan lifestyle. He described himself as a “more flexible” vegan but, when pressed about consuming meat, indicated that he “usually” avoids it.
On TikTok in 2022, Lutinel expressed his dreams of a beautiful life after spotting a woman his age at the airport. He imagined a romantic scenario, humorously saying it would be love at first sight over vegan chorizo at Trader Joe’s.
Veganism has consistently played a central role in Lutinel’s public life. An older report highlights a striking image of him, shirtless, promoting a PETA campaign that compares the water needed for beef production to the amount of water used in showers.
The Independent Florida Alligator noted that Lutinel advocates for the Student Animal Alliance by spotlighting veganism and emphasizes the environmental impact of animal agriculture.
Lutinel insists that being environmentally conscious means choosing green foods. Not too long ago, he paid homage to National Hug a Vegan Day while dressed as a pig on campus.
According to a report, he has labeled animal agriculture as “horribly exploitative” and established Climate Refarm, an initiative to help institutions transition to plant-based meals while advocating for increased taxes on meat and dairy products.
His campaign contrasts sharply with the incumbent Republican, Rep. Gabe Evans, who represents an agricultural stronghold. Weld County—part of this district—is a major contributor to Colorado’s beef and dairy production, accounting for a significant portion of the state’s agricultural output. The area is home to thousands of farms, with much of the land devoted to agriculture.
As reported, Weld County has over 500,000 cattle and ranks high in sheep production as well. RNC spokesperson Zach Kraft has criticized Lutinel, claiming he aims to dismantle Colorado’s meat industry.
Lutinel’s environmental advocacy also includes pushing legislation aimed at significantly cutting emissions from oil production within the state. This focus reflects the importance of the oil sector in the region, which employs many residents.
Previously, he supported a ballot measure in Denver that sought to ban certain meat processing and the sale of fur, demonstrating his alignment with extreme environmental efforts.
Lutinel has previously contested in elections labeled as some of the most competitive races and has been linked to organizations focused on immigration reform, specifically those opposing U.S. enforcement efforts.
In 2024, Mr. Evans secured the seat in Colorado’s 8th District with a narrow win of 49%, leading by just 2,449 votes.
