Jill Biden Reflects on Controversial Debate Performance
During the tumultuous June 2024 presidential debate, Joe Biden’s attempt at securing a second term took a downturn. He stumbled over his words, hesitated mid-sentence, and seemed noticeably disoriented.
This unsettling display prompted Jill Biden, the former first lady, to express her deep concern, fearing that her husband might be experiencing a stroke during the event.
“I was frightened, because I had never, ever seen Joe like that before or since. Never,” she shared with Rita Braver from CBS News. “I don’t know what happened. As I watched it, I thought, ‘Oh, my God, he’s having a stroke.’ And it scared me to death.”
Despite being asked to clarify his behavior, Jill Biden admitted she remained puzzled about what had transpired. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris, then-Vice President, referred to it as a “slow start.” At 81 years old, Biden was already the oldest active president in U.S. history, facing significant scrutiny over his age since he announced his reelection campaign.
The White House initially attributed his confused demeanor to a “cold,” then claimed it was due to jet lag from a recent overseas trip, later suggesting he may have overprepared for the debate. However, the impact was already significant. Concerns about his declining voice and lengthy pauses led to increasing demands for him to withdraw from the race. On July 21st, just 107 days before the election, Biden stepped down and endorsed Harris.
In the wake of the debate fallout, the House Oversight Committee initiated an inquiry into allegations of a cover-up regarding the president’s health. However, former White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients testified that he found “no evidence” that Biden was mentally unfit for his position, denying any cover-up claims.
Zients clarified that internal discussions about Biden’s pace and schedule were focused on managing public perception rather than indicating a lack of ability to govern.
In the aftermath, Jill continued to advocate for her husband amid mental fitness accusations, while the Biden administration offered various explanations for his performance during the debate.
Her comments emerged during a media tour promoting her upcoming memoir, “View from the East Wing,” which reflects on her experiences in the White House.
“I wrote about all the, you know, sometimes painful—but other times, most of it really beautiful moments that Joe and I shared during his presidency,” she told The Associated Press.
