Crosstown Cup Awarded to UCLA
UCLA has secured the Crosstown Cup, which is their second win against rival USC in the past three years.
Recent matchups have not been very close, with UCLA defeating USC 115-75, and they hold a head-to-head record of 23 wins, 12 losses, and 1 tie. That 115-point score is notable, being the second-highest in the Crosstown Cup’s history, behind UCLA’s 120 points scored in the 2023-24 academic year.
While USC football claimed the spotlight in the most prominent matchup, UCLA dominated the basketball season, sweeping all four games in both men’s and women’s divisions. This year also marked UCLA’s first NCAA championship in women’s basketball.
“Winning championships has always been the aim for UCLA, and we’re proud of our Bruins for clinching three NCAA and eight Big Ten titles this year,” remarked UCLA’s athletic director, Martin Jarmond. “This rivalry is legendary, and bringing home the Crosstown Cup is another significant achievement for our teams.”
The scoring for the Crosstown Cup is based on 19 sports in which both schools compete. Each sport offers a chance to earn 10 points based on head-to-head results. If both teams win an equal number of matches, points are divided between them.
In non-head-to-head sports, the top finishers in conference play earn 10 points as well. UCLA amassed a total of 10 points across nine sports, including women’s and men’s basketball, men’s volleyball, and baseball. For five other sports, such as women’s volleyball and men’s water polo, points will be shared.
This annual championship rivalry, established in the 2001-2002 school year, has roots going back to the 1920s.
