Jameis Winston: Giants show they are able to unite despite political differences

After Jackson Dart introduced former President Donald Trump at a rally last week, Jameis Winston, among others, felt compelled to address the resulting off-field issues. It’s not common for backup quarterbacks to take a stand like this, but Winston is a unique presence in the locker room.

Following a media session with Abdul Khater, the focus of the controversy, it was Winston who stepped up to the podium to share his thoughts.

“We’re living in it right now,” Winston commented. “We have a white child with blonde hair and blue eyes and black Islam, black children… They’re coming together to demonstrate that we can unite.”

“There’s no need to perceive everything in a perfect way, as if we’re in a snow globe. Perfection isn’t required,” he continued. “But we must support one another, foster love, and dismiss unnecessary opinions. Love is a more powerful emotion than hate. Many people voice their thoughts but how many actually strive for change? Instead of just pointing fingers and wanting to cancel someone, what about proactive efforts? That’s what we need.”

“Educate yourself. Grow from the experience. Build resilience.”

Meanwhile, Carter had criticized Dart’s introduction of Trump on social media, but both players, who were 2025 first-round draft picks, have emphasized that their differences extend beyond football and that they maintain a close friendship.

In his lengthy NFL career, Winston has had his ups and downs. He was picked first overall by the Buccaneers in 2015 and joined the Giants last season, initially as the third-string quarterback. When Dart moved up to the second spot, Winston ended up starting a couple of games, neither resulting in a win, but he quickly became Dart’s adviser. At 32, he is often seen discussing not just football, but religion and current events with teammates across the board.

Reflecting on the situation between Dart and Carter, Winston expressed his thoughts on outside forces that may be trying to disrupt the team’s unity.

“This illustrates how togetherness can manifest, highlighting that we don’t need to agree or even understand each other’s perspectives. But we should respect them,” Winston said. “These two young athletes have navigated discomfort yet emerged strong. It’s a valuable experience that underscores the powerful bond we have as athletes, sitting together within the team.”

“Ultimately, our commitment as a team is to unite and excel as football players,” he concluded.

During a meeting last Tuesday, Dart, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeau addressed the situation, and Winston also contributed to the discussion.
