With Luka Doncic at the center, the Lakers must focus on these key aspects.

The Lakers are focused on enhancing their roster around superstar Luka Doncic.

This topic gained traction last summer, and as we approach this offseason, the team finally has the salary and roster flexibility to tailor a squad that meets Doncic’s requirements.

There are multiple avenues for improvement ahead.

The NBA Draft is just four weeks away, with free agency starting next week, not to mention potential players available through trades or buyouts.

The franchise is also undergoing an internal overhaul, which includes appointing a new assistant general manager, Rohan Ramadas, and enhancing their practice facility.

Even with these changes, there are still various aspects of the roster that could be strengthened for a deeper playoff run.

So, what should the Lakers prioritize in their roster adjustments this offseason?

Rim Protection

When asked about areas for improvement for the upcoming 2026-27 season, coach JJ Redick pointed directly to defense.

He mentioned that while the Lakers have shown they can be solid defenders—ranking 12th in defensive rating over their last 42 games—they still need to elevate their game beyond being the 20th-ranked defense in the league.

Improving rim protection must be a priority.

During the regular season, only the Jazz had a lower shooting percentage within four feet of the basket than the Lakers, who struggled defensively all season long.

The Lakers managed to limit their opponents’ shots near the rim effectively, ranking 13th in that category, but their conversion rate on those attempts was a staggering 71.5%, landing them 29th overall.

This issue can partly be attributed to some of their guards, like Doncic and Austin Reaves, being frequently tasked with defending the rim—a role not suited for them.

The Lakers’ switching defense and the lack of perimeter containment often made it easier for opponents to drive to the basket.

Essentially, they desperately need stronger rim protection on their roster.

Starting Center

This goes hand-in-hand with the need for rim protection, a critical concern since trading for Doncic in February 2025.

Deandre Ayton exceeded expectations in his role and contributed significantly to the team’s success early on and during the playoffs.

However, the chemistry between him and Doncic has had its ups and downs, with inconsistencies arising in their expectations of each other.

Establishing a long-term solution at the starting center position is crucial.

This need has become even more pressing, considering the elite big men in the Western Conference, like Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic.

Depth

A significant hurdle for the Lakers in recent years has been a lack of reliable depth, particularly among players ranked 10 to 15 on the roster.

Looking to the future, whether it’s through player development or exploring underrated acquisitions, the Lakers need to bolster their rotation for when injuries hit or when they need to expand their lineup.

This depth has been a foundational element of success for teams like the Thunder and even the Spurs.

In short, it’s time for the Lakers to address this gap and improve.
