Federal Charges Against Protester After Clashes at ICE Facility

A 26-year-old man is facing federal charges after allegedly attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during protests at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey. Brendan John Geier is accused of kicking and biting officers, causing significant injuries according to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Blanche emphasized that violent acts against law enforcement cannot be justified as peaceful protest. He noted that federal officers are tasked with protecting property and facilities, especially given the lack of local law enforcement support. Rioting and aggression have escalated recently, and Blanche affirmed that those responsible will face justice.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) believes Geier was part of a larger group blocking access to the detention center on Thursday night. This unrest followed an order from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill for state police to create a “protected protest zone” around the area, yet protests have persisted.

The DOJ’s account indicates that the group refused ICE commands to disperse, leading to violent confrontations. As tensions rose, Geier reportedly engaged in a physical struggle with officers, biting one on the forearm and another on the knuckle, necessitating medical treatment for both officers.

Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin labeled Geier a “violent agitator,” reiterating support for federal law enforcement and stating that any assault on officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Acting Special Agent in Charge Spiros Karabinas of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Newark made clear that while protests are a right, they must not cross into violence against law enforcement.

Geier had his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Cari Fais in Newark and is now under location monitoring with a strict curfew. He is also prohibited from returning to the vicinity of Delaney Hall while awaiting trial.
