Manhunt Underway After Deputy Shot in Virginia

Law enforcement is currently engaged in an extensive search for a suspect connected to the tragic shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in Virginia. The incident occurred during a welfare check late Friday night.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reports that Deputy Logan Att was fatally shot around 9:26 p.m. while responding to a call to check on a family member.

“One deputy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead,” stated the sheriff’s office in a press release. “A second deputy, struck by a bullet, is being evaluated but is in stable condition.”

The suspect, Timothy Michael Puckett, is still at large. Multiple law enforcement agencies, from local to federal, are actively searching the Virginia-North Carolina border region. Puckett reportedly fled the scene immediately following the shooting, and the U.S. Marshals Service has announced a $10,000 reward for any information leading to his capture.

Puckett has a significant criminal history in nearby Patrick County. Records indicate that in 2016, he was convicted on multiple counts related to weapons and explosives. He faced charges including possession of explosives and tampering with a firearm’s serial number, resulting in an eight-month prison sentence, although the remainder of a 41-year sentence was suspended.

Most recently, Puckett was arrested on June 2, 2025, facing charges related to arson and the manufacturing of incendiary devices. A pretrial hearing is set for August 17 in Patrick County Circuit Court. It remains unclear if these previous charges are connected to the recent shooting.

The community is grieving the loss of Deputy Att.

“Today, Carroll County lost a hero, and his family is experiencing a tremendous loss,” Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp shared. “Please keep his family, friends, and fellow deputies in your thoughts and prayers.”

“My office is closely monitoring this tragic incident, and anyone with details about the suspect should reach out to the Virginia State Police. My heart goes out to the deputy’s family and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office amid this terrible situation,” Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger stated.
