Protesters gather masks and protective equipment near Delaney Hall in Newark

Protests Erupt Outside Newark Detention Center

On Saturday, a group of protesters gathered outside the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey, setting up a well-organized support operation before the main protests commenced.

Various supplies, including masks, duct tape, medical kits, sunscreen, helmets, and goggles, were observed in containers and arranged on tables close to the protest area.

Many demonstrators donned masks, with some wearing both respirators and helmets. When asked by a reporter if they anticipated any significant developments given their equipment and preparations, the group remained silent. In a surprising moment, someone rushed towards and seized the recording cellphone.

Clashes Between Protesters and Federal Agents

The protest drew around 200 anti-ICE activists, many linked to far-left and socialist movements. Supporters of ICE were also present, including individuals who identified as members of the far-right Proud Boys.

Delaney Hall has been at the heart of escalating tensions that began over a week ago, following an open letter alleging inhumane treatment of undocumented detainees, citing issues like lack of medical care and insufficient food.

The Department of Homeland Security swiftly rejected these claims, providing the facility’s menu to show that detainees receive three meals daily, featuring options such as chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak.

State Actions Amid Ongoing Tensions

Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey ordered state police to oversee protest security, emphasizing the need to protect demonstrators from a potential “surge of ICE” after federal officers faced violent confrontations earlier in the week.

Officials attributed much of the unrest to external agitators, with New Jersey’s Attorney General highlighting that five of the six individuals arrested recently were not from the state.

By Saturday morning, the detention center had transformed into a heavily secured area, shielded by large orange barricades and metal fencing.
