Former Scottish Leader Rejects Responsibility After Spouse Admits Guilt

Sturgeon Denies Embezzlement Claims Linked to Ex-Husband

LONDON (AP) – Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s former first minister, firmly rebuffed allegations of embezzling funds from the Scottish National Party (SNP), which came from her estranged husband. She emphasized that she wouldn’t apologize for his actions.

Speaking to the BBC, Sturgeon expressed feelings of betrayal over Peter Murrell’s wrongdoing. Murrell recently admitted to stealing over £400,000 (around $540,000) from the SNP to support his extravagant lifestyle during his tenure as chief executive. Sturgeon has repeatedly stated she had no knowledge of his illegal activities.

“I am not responsible for the crimes my ex-husband committed,” she asserted in her interview. “I’m not going to apologize for someone else’s crimes.”

These remarks came amid growing skepticism about her earlier assertions of ignorance regarding Murrell’s malfeasance. The whole situation has sparked wider concerns over the accountability of British politicians, particularly in light of various scandals that have eroded public trust in government.

Critics have also raised questions regarding why Murrell remained in his SNP role after Sturgeon assumed leadership in 2014, a decision Sturgeon acknowledged was a mistake.

“In hindsight, I wish I could have made a different decision,” she remarked.

Murrell’s guilty plea concludes a five-year police investigation into the SNP, which has been at the forefront of Scotland’s semi-autonomous governance for nearly 20 years and has advocated for Scotland’s independence from the UK.

This year, the SNP has faced significant turmoil amidst concerns about its financial integrity and a drop in membership.

Sturgeon led the Scottish Government for almost a decade before unexpectedly resigning in February 2023, leaving many baffled by her claim that it was simply time to move on.

The following month, Murrell stepped down after two decades as SNP leader, admitting to misleading the media regarding the party’s membership decline. In April, he was arrested at their Glasgow home.

Sturgeon herself was arrested in June 2023, though the police later cleared her of any wrongdoing.
