Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony faces trial for the alleged murder of Austin Metcalf.

Carmelo Anthony’s Trial Set to Begin

Carmelo Anthony, a student athlete from Texas, is set to stand trial this week. He is accused of stabbing rival high school football player Austin Metcalf, who died during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, in April 2025. Metcalf’s tragic death, occurring in the presence of his twin brother, provoked widespread sorrow.

What followed transformed the situation into a national headline. Anthony secured a prominent lawyer from Dallas, and his family started a fundraising campaign on GiveSendGo, drawing significant support.

A spokesperson for his family stated that the contributions were aimed at “combating white supremacy.” This statement ignited considerable online discussions, further motivating donations for Anthony, who is Black.

The contributions to Anthony’s defense fund have been climbing, with over 70 donations coming in just days before the trial. His family indicated that these funds would go towards living expenses, moving costs, and legal defenses.

At 19, and also a football player, Anthony was released on a $250,000 bail and reportedly moved into a $900,000 home in a gated community. Jury selection is set to happen on Monday, as the case concerns an altercation over seating at the track meet on April 2, 2025.

During the trial, Anthony’s attorney will argue that he acted out of self-defense and will address the presence of a knife on school property.

The proceedings commence on May 21, coinciding with a ceremony where Metcalf’s twin brother, Hunter, received their diplomas from Memorial High School.

According to prosecutors, a confrontation arose when Metcalf asked Anthony to vacate the team tent during a game at Quickendall Stadium. Allegedly, after warning Metcalf to keep his distance, Anthony pulled out a knife from his bag and stabbed him in the chest.

It is claimed that Anthony then fled the scene while Metcalf succumbed to his injuries in the arms of his twin.

Charged with first-degree murder, Anthony, being a minor at the time, is exempt from facing the death penalty or life imprisonment. Currently, he is under house arrest, though Metcalf’s father, Geoff, has publicly opposed this arrangement, leading to a gag order regarding the matter.

If found guilty, Anthony faces a potential sentence ranging from five to 99 years in prison.
