Fourth of July Parade Canceled in Los Angeles
The annual Fourth of July parade in Los Angeles has been canceled due to budget cuts from Mayor Karen Bass’ office, as stated in a letter shared on social media. The Sunland/Tujunga/Shadow Hills Rotary Club announced this disappointing news on Monday.
In their Facebook post, they explained that “due to city budget cuts from the Mayor’s Office, First Amendment events like our parade will no longer provide free city services.” This means that local organizations will now have to foot the bill for city services that ensure safety during events. The anticipated costs—around $20,000 for barricades, signage, and other necessary supplies—are more than four times the average budget for a parade, leaving the club feeling quite disheartened about the loss of a long-standing tradition.
Lydia Grant, the president of the Sunland-Tujunga Borough Council, expressed her surprise at the announcement, suggesting that the mayor’s office had been misleading in their communications. “I was very shocked because the mayor himself contacted his staff and told them to get it over with,” she mentioned. Grant went on to say that communication had reportedly deteriorated after the initial contact. This situation, as she highlighted, is unprecedented for their community.
There’s also some frustration brewing, as Grant pointed out that while local parades and festivals face cancellations, political protests seem to be receiving city support. “ICE has been paying people to protest,” she remarked, implying a misallocation of resources that doesn’t foster unity in the community.
The Rotary Club concluded their message with a note of hope, stating they will work towards hosting a parade in the future. Meanwhile, Fox News Digital has reached out for additional comments from the mayor’s office.
This follows similar news from Rutland, Massachusetts, which recently canceled its own Fourth of July celebrations due to insufficient public safety staffing. It seems that local communities across the country are facing similar challenges this Independence Day.
