Toledo pole vaulter Eva Moran passes away at 19 due to a car crash

Tragic Passing of Toledo Freshman Pole Vaulter

Eva Moran, a freshman pole vaulter at the University of Toledo, tragically died in a car accident in Ohio on Friday at the age of 19. This sad news was announced by the university on Saturday.

Reports indicate that she was “ejected” from her vehicle during the crash and was later pronounced dead at Marion General Hospital.

Andrea Grove McDonough, the Director of Cross Country and Track and Field at Toledo, expressed the team’s profound sorrow. “There are no words to adequately express the sadness our team is feeling with the loss of Eva,” she shared in a statement. “She was a wonderful young woman whose energy, determination, and kindness left a lasting impression on our program. Eva faced every practice and competition with optimism and a true passion for her teammates. She was eager to learn and proud to represent the University of Toledo. Our thoughts are with Eva’s family, friends, and teammates. We will honor her memory and the standard she set for all of us.”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol revealed that the accident occurred around 5:28 p.m. on May 29 in Claridon Township. It happened when Moran, driving eastbound, reportedly failed to maintain a proper distance and collided with a parked vehicle driven by 19-year-old Nathaniel Blankenship.

Following this, her car veered into the westbound lane, leading to a collision with another vehicle operated by 23-year-old Dalila Zamudio, who was also ejected from her car.

Blankenship “possibly” suffered injuries, while Zamudio was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The accident is still under investigation as of Saturday morning.

Moran, a resident of Caledonia, Ohio, had previously shown her athletic talent at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.

Before joining Toledo in 2024, she excelled in basketball, cross country, and track and field at River Valley High School, where she notably set the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference pole vault record in 2024. She also ranked seventh in the state in 2022 and fifth in 2024.

She decided to stay in her home state to pursue her studies in health science at Toledo. “The University of Toledo has a lot to offer, not just athletics, but also a great academic environment,” she shared in her biography.

“I’m so excited to be going to the University of Toledo because there’s so much room to grow and reach my full potential. I can’t wait to be a Rocket and see what’s in store for me at the University of Toledo!”

Moran is survived by her parents Alena and Derek, her brothers Maxon and Jaxton, and her sister Kayla.

Tom Moreland, the Vice President and Director of Athletics at Toledo, stated, “The University of Toledo community is heartbroken by the death of Eva Moran. She was an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character, and positive spirit inspired everyone who knew her. We extend our condolences to Eva’s family and urge everyone to keep them in their thoughts during this incredibly challenging time.”
