Georgia Man Charged in Stabbing of Great-Grandmother on MARTA Train

A 25-year-old man from Decatur, Georgia, is facing serious charges after allegedly stabbing his 66-year-old great-grandmother to death in an unprovoked attack on a MARTA train in Atlanta. Federal prosecutors announced that John Elijah Matthews could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty for this act.

According to a federal complaint, Matthews has been charged with assault using a dangerous weapon with intent to kill in a public transportation setting. If convicted, it’s up to Assistant Attorney General Todd Blanche to determine whether the death penalty will be pursued.

The victim, identified as Margaret Swan, was described by U.S. Attorney Theodore Hertzberg as a cherished great-grandmother. He condemned the violence as both unprovoked and senseless, highlighting the tragedy of the event.

The incident took place around 11:25 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, while Swan was riding from Lakewood Station to Oakland City Station. Matthews reportedly got on the train at 11:24 a.m. and was seen on surveillance video approaching Swan, who was alone in her seat just moments prior.

At 11:25:18 a.m., Matthews allegedly stood next to her, and roughly eight seconds later, he pulled out a knife. Then, at 11:25:32 a.m., he reportedly slashed her throat while holding her by the head. Eyewitness accounts noted that Swan screamed and attempted to rise from her seat, but Matthews continued to stab her multiple times.

Videos indicated Matthews stabbed Swan about 18 to 20 times in the chest and neck as she tried to defend herself. Passengers on the train rushed to get help, with at least one confirming that Swan and Matthews had no prior interaction before the attack.

After assaulting her, Matthews allegedly left her on the floor as the train arrived at the station just before 11:27 a.m. He exited the train with the knife still in hand and moved towards the end of the platform.

MARTA officers responded quickly, and Matthews was arrested shortly thereafter. An officer reported seeing him with the knife and ordered him to surrender, which he did not immediately comply with. He was taken into custody after backup arrived.

Evidence at the scene showed Matthews holding a bloody knife and exhibiting blood on his clothes. He reportedly told officers he had no fixed address or phone number. Despite emergency efforts, Swan was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fulton County coroner confirmed her time of death as 2 p.m. Matthews is still in custody, with a federal court appearance upcoming. The situation is under investigation by both the FBI and MARTA’s police department.

This incident raises alarm, as Marlo Graham, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Atlanta, noted that such crimes impact everyone who relies on public transportation. He stressed the need for a safe environment on Atlanta’s rail system.

Additionally, Matthews faces a local felony murder charge. Further inquiries have been directed to MARTA, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for more information.
