Thomas Partey Selected for World Cup Amid Legal Troubles

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey, who serves as vice-captain, is included in the 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup, despite facing multiple rape charges in the UK.

The 32-year-old, now playing for Villarreal in Spain, is set to go on trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court for seven rape charges and one sexual assault charge, with the trial possibly taking place in 2027, as reported by The Athletic.

He denies all allegations.

Partey was initially charged in July 2025 with five counts of rape and one account of sexual assault related to incidents involving three women between 2021 and 2022 when he was with Arsenal. He was further charged in February 2026 with two additional rape counts concerning a fourth woman from a separate investigation into incidents dating back to 2020.

He has consistently pleaded not guilty to these charges.

According to The Athletic, his lawyer stated that Partey denies the allegations, is fully cooperating with law enforcement, and has no further comments while the legal proceedings are ongoing.

Amid these serious allegations, Partey remained active in club football, having left Arsenal after his contract ended in June 2025 and subsequently joining Villarreal on a free transfer. Since then, he has made more than 30 appearances for his new club, including a notable return to London for a Champions League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

On the international front, Partey has been a regular presence for Ghana in World Cup qualifiers and friendly matches, playing a crucial role in the midfield setup over the years.

Ghana is gearing up for group stage matches against England, Croatia, and Panama, with games scheduled in the United States and Canada. The team will be based in Rhode Island during the tournament. Given the gravity of the situation surrounding Partey, his involvement is likely to draw significant scrutiny, especially since he is still awaiting trial in the UK.

There hasn’t been any public comment from the Ghana Football Association regarding his selection for the team.

The ongoing legal situation could also pose logistical challenges, as players may need to meet specific entry requirements to the U.S. and Canada. As per U.S. immigration rules, applicants must disclose any arrests or charges, with decisions made on a case-by-case basis by immigration officials.

Partey, recognized as one of the most notable players on Ghana’s national team, has been instrumental in recent international tournaments and qualifiers. As the case continues to evolve, all eyes will be on him during what could prove to be a contentious World Cup.
