Rep. Tom Kean Joins Race for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District
Rep. Tom Kean (R-N.J.) has recently resurfaced in the political scene, fully committing to the Republican nomination for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District after a period of solitude. He had been running without any opposition.
At 57, Kean has been absent from the House for nearly three months due to unspecified medical concerns, which has raised some doubts about his readiness to serve.
His last vote was cast on March 5, prompting further speculation about whether he is fit for office.
In his first interview since stepping back from public life, he stated, “Doctors are confident I’m on the path to a full recovery.” Perhaps he feels a bit overwhelmed by the situation. He acknowledged the community’s desire for transparency and expressed gratitude for their ongoing support.
He went on to say, “We expect to return to voting and campaigning soon.”
Kean, who is the son of a former governor, is seeking a third term in a competitive district deemed a “big loser” by the Cook Political Report.
This district, notably home to Trump’s Bedminster Golf Club, precariously voted for Trump by a narrow two-point margin in the 2024 presidential election. However, in last year’s gubernatorial race, it supported Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill instead of Republican Jack Ciatarelli, also by a two-point difference.
First elected in 2022, Kean edged out Democratic incumbent Tom Malinowski by 2.8 percentage points. His re-election in 2024 saw a more comfortable 5.4 percentage point lead over Democrat Susan Altman.
Last year, Kean garnered backing from President Trump, who praised him as “a great champion of America First.” Trump emphasized Kean’s efforts in various areas, like border security, crime reduction, and supporting veterans.
Recently, Trump renewed his support for Kean, further strengthening his campaign.
Back on Capitol Hill, some Republicans are expressing dissatisfaction with how the situation surrounding Kean was managed during his absence. One consultant from New Jersey mentioned, “Everyone is shocked at how badly Operation Kean has been handled,” emphasizing that this has cast a shadow of uncertainty. Many are left wondering why Kean hasn’t shared a simple message of reassurance to his constituents during this time.
