Rep Tom Kean confronts uncertain re-election battle during extended health leave

Election Update: Democrats vs. Republicans in New Jersey

Democrat Rebecca Bennett will challenge Rep. Tom Keene Jr. (R-N.J.) in the upcoming November election. Keene, who has been absent from public life for months due to undisclosed health issues, ran unopposed to secure the Republican nomination.

Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot, emerged victorious in a competitive primary for a key House seat in New Jersey, as reported by the Associated Press. Her success sets the stage for what could be a challenging re-election campaign for Keene, who is facing increasing scrutiny regarding his health and absence from Congress.

This suburban battleground is essential for House Republicans aiming to preserve their slim majority. After winning a close gubernatorial election last year, Democratic leadership in the region appears hopeful for a strong turnout.

Keene’s prolonged absence has raised questions, even among Republican leaders. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stressed the importance of transparency, noting that while he respects Keene’s privacy, he is unaware of the specific details surrounding his health challenges.

Just before the voting deadline, Keene issued a statement indicating he would be open about his health issues upon returning to work. He expressed anticipation in sharing his situation with the public but provided little additional information.

Despite his absence, Keene’s office continued to remain active on social media, and he introduced legislation during this time. His last vote took place on March 5, according to GovTrack, which tracks legislative attendance. In a show of support, former President Donald Trump expressed confidence in Keene’s performance.

On the Democratic side, Bennett navigated a competitive primary against former Biden administration officials Tina Sher and Michael Ross, along with businessman Brian Barrera, who campaigns on a progressive platform. Interestingly, Bennett ran a relatively moderate campaign, notably refraining from calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), setting her apart from her competitors.

In the 2024 election, Keene successfully defeated Democratic challenger Sue Altman by a margin of approximately five points. He is the son of former Governor Tom Kean, who served two terms in New Jersey during the 1980s.

Following her primary win, Bennett quickly faced criticism from the National Republican Congressional Committee, which labeled her a “tax-and-spend liberal” aiming to increase costs for New Jersey residents. The battle ahead promises to be fierce and closely watched.
