The New York Giants have officially welcomed Odell Beckham Jr. back to the team, marking a heightened sense of expectation compared to his earlier tenure in New York.
This time around, Beckham isn’t assured of a roster spot, and he’s aware of that reality.
In a media session Wednesday, he shared his appreciation for the reunion but also acknowledged feeling like an underdog. “I like it this way,” Beckham mentioned, reflecting on the lack of guarantees. “It lifts me up, builds me up like I have to earn it.”
He finds himself competing for playing time with veterans like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios. The Giants’ depth chart has turned into a bit of a challenge for former standout receivers navigating uncertain waters. It’s becoming apparent that Beckham faces stiff competition.
He revealed that he’s had open conversations with new head coach John Harbaugh about his spot on the team. During one of those discussions, Harbaugh bluntly stated, “I don’t want you here, I’m going to have to cut you.” Beckham, however, confidently replied, “No matter what happens, I’m going to fight resolutely.” He added, “If I have to do it when I know I’m not at my best or fit, I’m fine with that.”
Interestingly, Beckham’s real value might lie in his ability to mentor a young star like Malik Nabors, who shares a similar explosive style from LSU. Beckham, reflecting on his often tumultuous past, expressed a desire to coach the wide receivers. “Trust me, I know what to do and what not to do,” he noted.
Whether he secures a place on the 53-man roster or faces his own end in New York, it’s clear that Beckham’s journey this time will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
