Possible Jurors in Karmelo Anthony Trial Eliminated After Expressing They Couldn't Incarcerate Him: 'He Appears Childlike'

Carmelo Anthony’s Murder Trial: Potential Jurors Rejected

In the ongoing murder trial involving Carmelo Anthony, some potential jurors were dismissed after expressing unease about the possibility of imposing a life sentence due to the defendant’s youth.

During the jury selection process, prosecutors posed questions regarding whether factors like Anthony’s age, race, or physical resemblance to their own children might influence their decisions in a not guilty verdict. This led several jurors to signal that Anthony appeared “like a child” to them when discussing the life sentence for the murder of Austin Metcalf.

One juror shared, “I don’t think I can pass judgment on someone this young. One mistake, one argument, one conflict doesn’t make him a bad person.” This conversation came after the judge reassured potential jurors that they wouldn’t be penalized for expressing their honest feelings. The Assistant District Attorney, Dewey Mitchell, further prompted potential jurors to reflect on the implications of an African-American man being convicted of murder.

In response, another juror remarked, “I don’t know if I feel it’s right to put my brother in jail.”

The final jury selection will take place from a pool of 250 candidates in the coming days.

Carmelo Anthony is accused of murdering Austin Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas. The incident arose from a dispute over seating, with the defense claiming self-defense. According to arrest reports, witnesses described that Metcalf allegedly told Anthony to vacate the memorial team tent, at which point Anthony reportedly retrieved a knife from his bag after a confrontation ensued.

Witnesses recounted that following this, Anthony stabbed Metcalf in the chest before leaving the scene. Metcalf tragically succumbed to his injuries while with his twin brother, Hunter.

Anthony stated, “I was protecting myself. He laid his hands on me.” During subsequent police questioning, he confessed to the act, saying, “I’m not being charged with this, I did it.” Afterward, Metcalf was seen asking an officer, “Are you okay?”

Hunter Metcalf, Austin’s twin, vividly remembered the moment of his brother’s death, saying it felt like his brother’s soul departed him. “I turned my head around and suddenly I saw him running down the bleachers clutching his chest…I tried to stop the bleeding, and as I held his head and looked into his eyes, I just watched his soul leave, and mine was taken, too,” recalled Hunter.
